Goodwins Music Video Theory
  • Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (metal videos usually show stage performances, while pop music usually has dance routines.
  • There's a relationship between the lyrics of the song and its visuals. (e.g. contradicting, amplifying or illustrating)
  • There's a relationship between the music and the visuals. The tone and the atmosphere of the visual reflect that of the music.
  • The record label usually demands that the artists face needs to be shown within the videos. the artists may develop motifs which reoccur within there other work. these include Cu's of the artists face, iconography of bands image, visual trade marks and motifs.
  • there is a frequent notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors stages etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  • there are often intertextual references within the videos (to tv, film and other music videos)
