EVALUATION QUESTION 1

EVALUATION QUESTION 2

EVALUATION QUESTION 3

What did you learn from your audience feedback?

Over the course of creating our music video we got audience feedback throughout, but mainly at different mile stones such as our DIGI pack and posters and the first draft of the video.

The feedback for our first draft of the video was mainly very positive and the audience could see we had taken care and time into creating the music video, the teacher even said is seems to be on its way to becoming perfect, however the constructive criticism we got was that we needed more varied shots of the band, so for example during the guitar solo you could see close ups or different shots of the guitarists, and just more varied camera angles to make the video more interesting. with being told this we made a booking house the drama room again and created more varied shots and angles of the band. we were also advised to add more shots of our narrative character 'Niamh' as she seemed to just 'drop out' towards the end of the video, this was clear and needed more work.

I then got feedback for my DIGI pack and poster, this was surprisingly positive and helpful. I was told that my idea to keep the outside very simple and typical, and the inside bright and colourful was very smart and created intrigue to the design and was very unique. and also the use of the bands logo was well used and created a brand for the band on the album and the poster.both were also said to be very complimentary towards each other with colour scheme and style and also still followed the rock genre. the constructive criticism I got was that on the poster I needed to specify where the album could be purchased and that the social media links needed to be large at the bottom so that the audience could see them. and on my DIGI pack to have the copyright statement at the bottom on the back made the album look more authentic and created a sense of an established publisher.

EVALUATION QUESTION 4

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We used media technologies from the very beginning of this project to find inspiration, plan our music video and create our music video.
YouTube was our main source for finding inspiration for our music video. Once we had picked a genre we would watch music videos from that genre to gain some sort of idea of what we want to create. Doing this gave each of us an image on what we thought we could create so from there we brainstormed all of our ideas. Putting them together to construct a final idea that we would then create.
One the group members (Harry) would use Apple music (Media Technology) to listen to loads of music from that genre trying to find the song which we could create a music video for. This is how we found our chosen song 'Back to me' by 'Of Mice and Men'.
To Construct our music video the lead cinematographer (Tommy) used a Sony A6000 to film everything. To edit the video the lead editor (Max) used Adobe's Premier Pro which allowed us to create the desired effects of slow motion and colour correction.
Adobe Photoshop was used a lot during this project as we had to use it to create our Digi Pak and posters (Ancillary Texts).  Photoshop allowed us to tamper with the colours along with brightness and contrast of our images to make sure they looked exactly how we wanted them to.
DaFont was the name of the website we used to find the font that we thought matched our genre of music video. We picked out 5-6 that we liked and thought worked and then gave out a questionnaire asking 'which of these fonts do you think best suits a rock genre music video.
Blogger was used throughout the entire process of this project to record all the progress we were making towards creating our final creative piece.

The media technologies that we used for our evaluation were Word Documents, a video and a voice note.

Plan for Thursdays shoot

On Thursday we are going to Danson Park to shoot some of our Narrative parts of our Music Video. We have decided that Niamh will be who our Narrative is based around. We will do some shots of her walking around the park looking as if she is lost or looking for something.

We will need to book out some equipment including a second camera and a tripod. I will be bring my camera and steady cam as well.

We hope that the weather will not be raining as this will make it extremely difficult to use some of the equipment, especially the camera.

We are hoping that with the steady cam we will be able to capture really smooth tracking shots of Niamh walking or maybe just tracking in towards her.

production log 2

For our second shoot on Thursday we are going to shoot more of the band scenes in our music video. We are aiming to get a few more shots of the individual band members so that its not constantly a full band shot. This is because there are parts of the song where we want the audiences attention to be on specific band members. For example on the guitar solo we want to get a close up of the guitarist playing. If we were to only use a full band shot then the audience is going to get confused and probably get bored. We want to mix it up and use a variety of shots to make it more interesting for the viewer.  we also want to reshoot some shots as they were blurry, this we will fix by using a crane for the over the shoulder drum shots.

Once again we will probably book out two cameras so that we can have two people filming at once which speeds up the whole process. Obviously we have to consider not getting in each others way but i'm sure we can work around that.  We will likely book out a tri-pod too incase theres any full band shots or and shots that need to be steady with ease. A steady cam might also be needed if there are any shots that require a steady hand, so if we are including a lot of motion in our camera movement we want to avoid getting too much camera shake. Lastly we will need to book out the LED light that places on top of the camera. The reason we use this light is because when trying to film close ups of the band we noticed that the shadow of the camera and the camera man was being shown in the frame. This was because the lights being used to light the scene were behind us. Using the LED light was helpful as it got rid of that shadow.

shoot 1

The first shoot went well we shot 3 full band performances as a wide angle shot, we also used a steady cam for close ups and different angled shots this went fairly well the lighting on the band was picked up perfectly with the cameras, we also used a clip on camera light we used this to illuminate the close up of the person or object we were filming this will be edited in post production to blend with the other colouring.
However the next time we shoot we need to re shoot certain shots as the drummer (Tom Ross) has his hair down in one shot and another its up so we need to re shoot the scenes with his hair down all the way through. we are also going to film smaller details like the shot of the drummers foot when the build up is made with the base drum. there is a shot we filmed of over head of the drummer however this came out blurry this we will fix by reshooting and using the camera crane to steady the camera.
Here are some stills from the shoot:

production log 1

We have planned to do our first shoot on Wednesday next week. We have asked the drama staff whether it will be ok to shoot in the room we need which they have agreed will be fine. We will book out the equipment we need on the day. This includes: 2 cameras, Tri-Pod and a steady cam.

We also need to make sure that the band members are available to shoot that day which so far everyone except the guitarist has agreed on that day whilst the guitarist (Luke) has not got back to us but we are convinced it should be ok.

We need to message the band members to let them know what kind of clothing we need them to wear. This will be decided by the group member in charge of mice-en-scene (George).

test shoot

we did this test shoot just to get a rough idea of the space and the shots we would like to use. we were able to work out placement of the drums and the actors within the frame. this makes shooting easier as we have already planned where people are going to be and also able to see what the lighting will look like and whether or not the room will work.

DIGI pack final

This is my final DIGI pack idea, i used the text RINGBEARER this font had a rock genre vibe to it as it was slightly distorted. i wanted my front cover and my back cover to be very plain and dark so that when you open it the dark galaxy blue colours pop out and make eye catching this idea was taken from the number 1 album 'thats the spirit' by Bring Me The Horizon. this was theirs:
The reason of the copied idea was because they are within the same genre as the watchmen and have the same kind of sound. I also created a logo for the band which is the W and the T overlapped creating an awesome logo to place on the CD and the inside of the DIGI pack, creating a symbol the band will be remembered by. The image i have used follows the rock genre as the costumes used are very dark and the people in them where made to look very serious creating a very rock style to the image.

this week

this week I will be finishing a story board in detail, with the aim of creating an anamatic showing the length of shots to co inside with the song. And we will also be creating a production plan for when and where and who we will be filming with, and will be over looking costume planning as I am the director I will over see each person.

font feedback

we originally thought about using the bottom font however the ring bearer font looks fuller and is still prominent and worn down font that looks good. as other people have thought after giving them this tally sheet.

story board

This is our story board, however we have done each frame by seconds and there may be different shots within the seconds framed. this means their are more shots but they are of the same thing from different angles.

Song lyrics

No turning back now,
I'm moving ahead toward the way out.
Don't you hate how,
We get left behind in the fallout.

Take a breath and take heart

Instead of pulling apart
When you find yourself back at the start.

Every part of me

Catches on fire underneath,
When I ignite, you'll see.
Maybe I can light the way,
I can light the way back to me.
Back to me.

I won't stand down,

As I feel the ground begin to crack now.
So I cry out,
The same call to arms but with a new sound.

Take a breath and take heart,

When you are falling apart
And you don't even know where to start.

Every part of me

Catches on fire underneath,
When I ignite, you'll see.
Maybe I can light the way,
I can light the way back to me.

Let hope be everything that you need,

To march to a victory,
When you can't feel the difference between,
An inch and infinity.

Every part of me

Catches on fire underneath,
When I ignite, you'll see.
Maybe I can light the way,
I can light the way.

Every part of me

Catches on fire underneath,
When I ignite, you'll see.
Maybe I can light the way,
I can light the way back to me.
Back to me.

Font

The font we have chosen is Scorch Flash with light stroke to show the distortion of the font. we felt that this font was representing the genre, because of the distorted text it shows the rough edgy side of rock.

Independent and Major Record Labels

Major record labels:
Major record labels are large company's who produce distribute and market their artists work this is because most major labels are owned by a parent company Sony BMG is owned by Sony and so on. one of the positives of being part of a major label is that they have large amount of contacts to get you the best people to market, produce and distribute your work. however with being part of a major label you have to sign a contract that will dictate how long you work for them. Here are The Big Three and some of their subsidiaries:
Sony BMG
subsidiaries; Columbia Records, Legacy Recordings and RCA Records
Universal Music Group
subsidiaries; Island Records, Motown, Virgin Records and Vevo LCC
Warner Music Group
Subsidiaries; Atlantic Records, Warner Bros Records, Fuelled by Ramen
The big three labels can make up around 80 percent of the music market.By industry definition, a major label is a label that commands a high percentage of the annual sales of records, and has their own distribution system.
Independent record labels.
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding of or outside major record labels. Many commercial bands and musical acts begin their careers on independent labels. there are huge benefits to being signed by an independent record label for example you have more personal creative control over your work as an artist. however the down sides to being under and independent label is that it has a smaller range of distribution possibility's, and less contacts for marketing.
here are some independent labels and their signed artists.
Sumerian Records - Asking Alexandria
Rise Records - Cane Hill
Demon Records - Elvis Costello

Island Records - Amy Winehouse
