Plan for Thursdays shoot

On Thursday we are going to Danson Park to shoot some of our Narrative parts of our Music Video. We have decided that Niamh will be who our Narrative is based around. We will do some shots of her walking around the park looking as if she is lost or looking for something.

We will need to book out some equipment including a second camera and a tripod. I will be bring my camera and steady cam as well.

We hope that the weather will not be raining as this will make it extremely difficult to use some of the equipment, especially the camera.

We are hoping that with the steady cam we will be able to capture really smooth tracking shots of Niamh walking or maybe just tracking in towards her.

For our second shoot on Thursday we are going to shoot more of the band scenes in our music video. We are aiming to get a few more shots of the individual band members so that its not constantly a full band shot. This is because there are parts of the song where we want the audiences attention to be on specific band members. For example on the guitar solo we want to get a close up of the guitarist playing. If we were to only use a full band shot then the audience is going to get confused and probably get bored. We want to mix it up and use a variety of shots to make it more interesting for the viewer.  we also want to reshoot some shots as they were blurry, this we will fix by using a crane for the over the shoulder drum shots.

Once again we will probably book out two cameras so that we can have two people filming at once which speeds up the whole process. Obviously we have to consider not getting in each others way but i'm sure we can work around that.  We will likely book out a tri-pod too incase theres any full band shots or and shots that need to be steady with ease. A steady cam might also be needed if there are any shots that require a steady hand, so if we are including a lot of motion in our camera movement we want to avoid getting too much camera shake. Lastly we will need to book out the LED light that places on top of the camera. The reason we use this light is because when trying to film close ups of the band we noticed that the shadow of the camera and the camera man was being shown in the frame. This was because the lights being used to light the scene were behind us. Using the LED light was helpful as it got rid of that shadow.

The first shoot went well we shot 3 full band performances as a wide angle shot, we also used a steady cam for close ups and different angled shots this went fairly well the lighting on the band was picked up perfectly with the cameras, we also used a clip on camera light we used this to illuminate the close up of the person or object we were filming this will be edited in post production to blend with the other colouring.
However the next time we shoot we need to re shoot certain shots as the drummer (Tom Ross) has his hair down in one shot and another its up so we need to re shoot the scenes with his hair down all the way through. we are also going to film smaller details like the shot of the drummers foot when the build up is made with the base drum. there is a shot we filmed of over head of the drummer however this came out blurry this we will fix by reshooting and using the camera crane to steady the camera.

We have planned to do our first shoot on Wednesday next week. We have asked the drama staff whether it will be ok to shoot in the room we need which they have agreed will be fine. We will book out the equipment we need on the day. This includes: 2 cameras, Tri-Pod and a steady cam. 

We also need to make sure that the band members are available to shoot that day which so far everyone except the guitarist has agreed on that day whilst the guitarist (Luke) has not got back to us but we are convinced it should be ok. 

We need to message the band members to let them know what kind of clothing we need them to wear. This will be decided by the group member in charge of mice-en-scene (George).

Independent and Major Record Labels

Major record labels:

Major record labels are large company's who produce distribute and market their artists work this is because most major labels are owned by a parent company Sony BMG is owned by Sony and so on. one of the positives of being part of a major label is that they have large amount of contacts to get you the best people to market, produce and distribute your work. however with being part of a major label you have to sign a contract that will dictate how long you work for them. Here are The Big Three and some of their subsidiaries:

The big three labels can make up around 80 percent of the music market.By industry definition, a major label is a label that commands a high percentage of the annual sales of records, and has their own distribution system.

Independent record labels.

 An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding of or outside major record labels. Many commercial bands and musical acts begin their careers on independent labels. there are huge benefits to being signed by an independent record label for example you have more personal creative control over your work as an artist. however the down sides to being under and independent label is that it has a smaller range of distribution possibility's, and less contacts for marketing.

Codes and Conventions of the Rock Genre:

• There is throughout the genre a theme of being dark, emotional and meaningful. This is shown through the dark lighting in videos and photoshoots and heavy, meaningful lyrics with a strong sound. Often, the colours black and white will be used to connote seriousness, and emotion.
•  Long and/or wide camera angles are normally used to allow the whole band to be seen and to show music instruments being played.There are also close ups of the artists playing the instruments, this is to show the members individualy and to create an intense feel to the video.
• The Performance in most videos shows the band playing together and somtimes shoows each member plain separately, or in some videos the band are shown to be playing separately untill the last chours then they come together to give the video a more dramatic ending. 
• The costume of the band members are typically seen wearing black with leather jackets and ripped jeans and boots. this is to give the band a more powerfull look. they would also sometimes have lots of jewellery even more typically they have messy black/long hair as this is used to create a larger head banging effect. they also typically have lots of tattoos showing as this is a connotation of being strong and also tough.

Postmodernism

Postmodernism is a shortcut to mass audiences.

The oxford dictionary refers to post modernism as "a style and concept in the arts characterised by distrust of theories and ideologies and by the drawing of attention to conventions."

"Postmodernism is said to describe the emergence of a social order in which the importance and power of mass media and popular culture means they govern and shape all other forms of social relationships"- Striate 1995:224

Introduction / History of music videos

The very first style of modern music videos were recordings of live performances that were used as short films another style of video was Frank Sinatra - My Way. Then came the pre recorded audio in music videos, then came the artistic music videos these were different and one of the first was by QUEEN with bohemian rhapsody. This was one of the first artistic style of music video it can be interpreted in different ways as the video is very different with a choir scene and an interpretive dance scene. The song by Queen was considered groundbreaking and that it marked the beginning of an era of music videos and is considered to be one of the first music videos to use visual effects as seen here:

and another more modern style of music video which is the narrative style this style is the audio in the background almost telling a story as the audience watches on youtube or social media. an example of this would be bring me the horizons video for their song true friends:

there is also another style of video that has only come around in the past 10 year which is a Lyric video this began when youtube started when people came out with new music fans would create lyric videos this was due to the karaoke version might not exist or be the original. however over the few years bands and artists have begun to adopt this idea as they have their own channels on youtube and create their own using their own original artwork. for example a continuation of the True Friends by Bring Me The Horizon:

The invention of film and cinema brought around the possibility of combining music and moving images this lead to silent films. However once film and cinema began to show films with sound within the video this is when the idea first came around, this was in the 1920s. during the great depression Jazz singers and bands where very popular. during this era Jazz musicians such as Bessie Smith, created short films for popular songs.

In 1965 Bob Dylan filmed Subterranean Homesick Blues as part of a segment for D. A. Pennebaker's film, Don't Look Back - this is referred to as one of the very first modern music videos.

Pop music TV shows became a thing in 1970 as record companies discover that there is an opportunity to promote their music own tv as well as radio. they began to focus on producing short "promos". This was when the early music videos began to replace the live performances on the TV. with MTV starting in August 01 1981 with the very first music video to be shown on its show was by the Buggles with Video Killed The Radio Star, this show lead to more people viewing music videos as they were on tv a lot of the time. now we have multiple channels on tv that show different genres of music and we have channels designated for specific genres.

Mini Music Video Project - Filming

We moved the drum kit AMPs and bass guitar into the booked out room and set them up exactly like the video so we moved the kit the the side in the centre of the room and bass guitar just infant. however the cameras where not picking up the lighting very well at all so we used our phones to record instead. this lead to the issue of the video being not steady however this will be worked out in the editing process.

Mini Music Video Project - story board

Today we were put in groups to create one minute of music video copying the video shot by shot. we have chosen the song "lights out" by Royal Blood this video had different styles and different shots during the video. this is some of our story boards for the video shot by shot.

 we have also booked a large music performance room so that wee can record and the instruments are also booked out for next lesson.
